Flop candidates
PUNE: Sample this. Thirty-seven per cent of the 1,136 candidates contesting the February 1 civic polls in the city do not even have a basic secondary school certificate (SSC) to show! For a city widely regarded as an education hub, a figure like that revealed by a survey reflects a dismal picture.
While only six per cent of the candidates are post-graduates, 17.4 per cent are graduates, 10.3 per cent have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam and 20 per cent the SSC exam.

The survey, titled 'Citizens' Election Watch', was conducted by local voluntary organisation, National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC).
Out of the total contestants, 1,050 nominees were taken into consideration for reaching these figures. The data, collected as part of the NSCC exercise, referred age, educational qualifications, movable and immovable property owned by the candidate and court cases, if any, pending against the candidates.
Speaking to TOI, NSCC president Satish Khot said the survey aimed at creating public awareness about the candidates they would be voting for. "Voters need to know what kind of people they are electing. Minimum information about the candidates should be available to them," Khot said.
"The fact that very few candidates are well qualified is a matter of worry for Pune, which aims at becoming a global city," Khot observed.
"The mohalla committees have been conducting interviews of candidates in each ward to judge them. We found out that it was extremely necessary for our elected members to be educated because most of the uneducated ones did not know what storm water drains are," Khot said.
